Work = Area Under The Curve = 1/2 * Base * Height
Work = 1/2(X2 - X2) * F         Substitute F = - K(X2 - X2)
Work = 1/2(X2 - X2) * (-K(X2 - X2)) Ignore the negative(-); it indicates direction and work is a scalar

Work = 1/2 K(X2 - X2)2 = stored in the spring
