Uranus was the first planet discovered with a telescope. It was seen in 1781 by the amateur astronomer William Herschel. At first he reported it as a comet, but after observing it for a few weeks he realized it to be a planet. The orbit around the sun is almost circular, taking 84 years to complete. It spins around in 17 hours. This rotation is strange, because the planets axis is horizontally in the same plane as the orbit of the sun. This is a unique feature

Uranus, a beautiful blue planet

Vaguely visible rings around Uranus.
The total mass of Uranus is much smaller than Jupiter’s. But the density is much higher. After some research one concluded that its core of rock and ice is almost the same size as that of Jupiter and Saturn.
Seen from the earth, there are not many details visible on this planet. Its atmosphere looks a lot like that of Saturn and Jupiter and it is very stable. The reason seems to be that this planet has no internal heat source, apapert from its distance to the sun of 2,8 billion km.
