to www.thinkquest.org,
"ThinkQuest® is an educational initiative committed
to building and redefining "community" by challenging learners
of all ages to create high quality, innovative and content-rich
educational Web sites that are made available to others
around the world via the Web. Because of the Internet, groups
of people from diverse locations, backgrounds, experiences
and nationalities are able to work and communicate in meaningful
ways. ThinkQuest capitalizes on this new form of communication
by inviting learners to explore topics, collaborate to achieve
a goal and add meaningful content to the Internet."
hinkQuest®
organizes three web site competitions, or "challenges,"
that foster education through the new medium of the internet.
Changing Borders is a participant in the ThinkQuest Internet
Challenge for the 1999 competition. ThinkQuest® says that,
"The ThinkQuest Internet Challenge is an international
program for students ages 12 through 19 that encourages
them to use the Internet to create information-rich Web-based
educational tools and materials. Students form teams with
their colleagues from around the world and are mentored
by teachers or other adult coaches. In the running for scholarships
and awards totaling more than $1 million, student participants
learn collaboration, leadership and critical thinking skills
that help raise their level of education and technological
prowess. Awards are handed out across five categories: Arts
& Literature, Science & Mathematics, Social Sciences, Sports
& Health and Interdisciplinary. Finalists travel to the
ThinkQuest Awards Weekend where they compete for the challenge’s
top prizes."
