THE FIRST ONE

In the beginning, there was only the mana--the most basic primal energy, that which powers all magic. The First One created itself deliberately from the mana that existed. This was not impossible because there was so much mana that nothing was impossible. However, in that first sublime act of creation, over half the existing mana was used up.

For an immeasurable period of time, the First One contemplated Itself, sublime in Its unity. But eventually, It became bored with that. Wanting company, It split itself into myriad parts [thereby using up more of the mana].

That kept It amused and busy for a while, but even that became boring, as one can only converse with oneself for so long. So They decided to create others, creatures that were no part of Them.

Accordingly, They took even more of the original mana and fashioned universes. In those universes, They created living things, self-willed and unpredictable.

In order to keep things interesting, They also took most of the mana from these universes, leaving Their creations with only physical laws that could not be avoided or bent. There are a few things that can create mana, but the created ones aren't very good at it.

The Old Ones love Their creations (us) and interact with them joyfully. They love Their children, just as any good parent does, but They don't always understand us...

(Note: [The following two] myths were written by two Year Five students attending a primary school in the north of England. They had been studying myths and legends and in particular creation myths from around the world. The stories are based on Adam and Eve and Pandora's Box and have been adapted so that they include things that feature in their locality eg windmill, Kwiksave etc.

IN THE BEGINNING (1)

In the beginning there was no windmill, houses or streets. There was nothing for Thorn the leader of the Gods to be proud of. There were no sounds of birds or the wind.

He decided to make animals and birds.

Thorn decided to make the first woman. He made her out of mud and clay. He named her Beryl. She played with the animals. But she had started to feel lonely, because she was the only person on the Earth. She then told this to Thorn. He told her that he would make a man for her. He made the man out of mud and clay. Thorn called him Bob. Beryl was happy now and Bob was also happy and he really liked Beryl and the animals.

Thorn and the other Gods decided to give Bob and Beryl a candle that had a face on the front. Thorn explained that it must not be lit. Bob and Beryl very solemnly answered, "Yes we will not light it."

Bob was trying not to look at the candle. He kept asking Beryl if they should light it but Beryl said, "We have told Thorn we won't light it and we won't."

Bob tried to get the candle out of his mind. When Beryl was talking to Thorn he was standing near the candle. Suddenly he heard a voice which said "ooooooow you know you want to light me." Bob spun round and he saw the lips on the candle moving. He shouted to the candle to shut up.

Soon after Beryl was playing with one of the animals while Bob was hiding near the candle to see if it would speak. It didn't start to speak until Bob was right in front of it; it said the same words again. This time Bob was not to be put off. There was a stick of wood next to the candle and Bob struck it hard on the candle holder and lit the candle. Instead of smoke coming frome the flame, lots of things like thunder, lighning and hurricanes came out and made the place dark.Suddenly Thorn was standing next to him, "Why did you light that candle?" he shouted angrily.

"I am sssorry," stuttered Bob.

While Bob was saying this, Thorn was thinking of a good punishment for Bob. He said to him, "You are going to be thrown out of Thornton and have to work hard to earn your living in Cleveleys. You will leave Beryl behind and I will make a new husband for her." Beryl was very upset and Thorn tried to cheer her up and her new husband tried aswell. She evenually cheered up and forgot about Bob.

IN THE BEGINNING (2)

In the beginning before Kwik Saves and Wursels long before any of that there was a god called Thorn; he was the leader of Thornton. Thornton was a bare place with no people, animals, plants or birds, so the other gods decided to create these things.

One of the gods was a very good craftsman so he made cats and gave them long whiskers; dogs and gave them waggling tails; and all sorts of other things, but he was not as clever as his sister, as she was planning ahead. She made First woman out of clay and stones and gave her the gift of beauty. They named First woman Beryl.

Days had passed and the gods began to notice that Beryl was getting lonely. "I am making First man this time," Thorn's son said angrily.

Finally the first man was finished and Thorn named him Bob and he got the gift of curiosity.

Thorn didn't like this but he couldn't do anything except punish his son by tying him to a rock and rolling it but he can never die because he is a god.

As a present, Beryl and Bob got a book but they weren't allowed to read it. Bang! Bob slammed down the book.

"What's the point of a book when you can't read it?" said Bob.

Beryl was going out. "Whatever you do, don't open the book."

But Bob was filled with curiosity, still he couldn't open the book.

"Please Ooopen the book it might be good to read" said a sly fox.

"Oh all right then" said Bob.

A gust of wind suddenly rose and all the animals disappeared and Thornton was bare again.

As a punishment Bob had a magic stick and had to make everything again and it was hard work.

The stone was still rolling with Thorn's son tied to it and Beryl was cleaning and as for Bob he thought it wasn't fair that only he was getting punished, so he told Beryl that the other book was destroyed and he'd got another that she could read and of course he hadn't. She was just about to open it when Thorn appeared. They were both thrown out of Thornton and were not seen again....
