PAWNEE

Tirawa Atius (atius = "lord") was the great god, he created everything and catered to the needs of every living thing. Known to us as the Milky Way, Tirawa Atius created the Path of the Departing Spirits. East of that is the Male Principle/Morning Star, and to the west is the Female Principle/Evening Star. Tirawa preordained everything that has happened and will ever happen, and his servants are the stars. The Morning Star pursued the Evening Star from east to west, but she stayed away from him, giving him 10 tests to find out his character, but continued to beckon him. She was flirting and teasing because that's what women do.

The chaos beneath them was asylum to one of these tests that Evening Star put forth to Morning Star. A large serpent guarded the huge collection of water that lay below the stars. Morning Star launched a ball of fire at the serpent, and in so doing dried up enough water to reveal rocks and soil. Morning Star then took a pebble and threw it into the sea of chaos and it became the earth.

Tirawa ordered four "lesser" gods to take charge of it. The four Gods were East, West, North and South. They took each other's hands at the edge of the great sea on earth and revealed a landmass.

Morning Star eventually caught up with Evening Star and they made love. Soon Evening Star gave birth to a daughter whom she placed on a could and sent to earth. Evening Star asked her lover to water her "celestial garden" and so he made the first rain as a gift to Evening Star.

Mother Maize, the most important food plant, emerged from Evening Star's celestial garden. She gave the maize to her daughter to plant on earth. Soon the two stars produced a son, who married his sister. This couple are the parents of all human beings, and were the first to cultivate maize.
