Eye Health/Contact Lenses

Several tests related to eye health will be provided. Retinal (internal eye) examinations will be performed for all athletes. For athletes involved in contact sports two additional tests, retinal photography and visual fields analysis, will provide baseline information regarding present visual health  and may provide critical future information in the unfurtunate event of ocular accident. Visual fields analysis will also provide insight regarding any visual blind spots or limitations in field of sight.

Color vision will be evaluated in all athletes. Glare recovery, if indicated by demands of sport, will test the athlete´s visual performance in low and high ilumination conditions, and will probe his/her anbility to recover after bright glare situations such as occur when looking at high intensity arena lights or bright sunlight. Internal ocular pressure (tonometry) will be measured in athletes over the age of 30. External eye health and contact lens fits (biomicroscopy) will also be checked. Any athlete who falls into the follow-up category for eye health/contact lenses should be seen by her/his family eye care practitioner.
