National Prohibition in the USAOn December 22, 1917 with majorities of the two-thirds requirement, Congress submitted to the state the 18th Amendment to the constitution. This prohibited the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors. By January 1919 ratification was completed, with 80 percent of the member of 46 states legislatures recorded in approval. To enforce the 18th Amendment Congress passed the National Prohibition Act. Prohibition always represented more of an idea than a reality. On this basis the Prohibition era began at midnight on January 16, 1920. |
