Introduction to Prohibition in the USA

In the early 1920s US economy was growing quickly and enjoying a period of rapid economic growth. This period was called ‘The Roaring Twenties.’ American society was also changing. A lot of people thought of that time as a time of partying and fun. There were many positive results, such as the development of the country’s economy and industries but not everything turned out perfect. Prohibition was designed to reduce drinking by eliminating the business that manufactured, distributed and sold alcoholic beverages. Prohibition was the period of time when the women’s society set up the anti-saloon league, WCTU and ASL, and was trying to ban alcohol. Some prohibition leaders looked forward to an educational campaign that would greatly expand once the drinking business become illegal. Because of this gangsters became very popular in this period.
