Mountain Resorts
30% of Bulgaria's territory is occupied by beautiful mountains. Most of them are concentrated in the south-west part of the country. The biggest are Rila, Pirin, Rodopes, the Old Mountain, Vitosha and others. Most of them are covered with forests and vast pastures. Many rivers spring out of them. Bulgarian mountains offer possibilities for routing and ski tourism. Several international ski centers are established.
Borovets
| The mountain resort Borovets is situated 70 km. from the capital at an altitude of 1230 ì. It is built in the middle of a century-old coniferous forest. In the boundaries of the resort and nearby large facilities for summer and winter sports are built - ski tracks, lifts, etc. Borovets is a starting point for many tourist routes in Rila as also towards the highest peak on the Balkan peninsula - Musala. The nature here, the crystal-clear air and the built base attract many tourists not only in winter but in summer too. Annually many international sport competitions are held here. |
Pamporovo
| The mountain resort Pamporovo is in the Western Rodopes, 85 km. from Plovdiv. This part of the mountain is covered with vast coniferous forests, meadows, juniper, raspberries and blackberries. Beautiful sights are unveiled from the high ridges. The climatic conditions allow the snow to stay until late spring. The building of the resort began in 1936. Today Pamporovo has a modern hotel and sport base. Apart from the excellent conditions for ski tourism there are conditions for walking tourism too. The resort is a famous international ski center. |
Aleko - Shtastlivetsa (Aleko - The Happy One)
Right next to the capital Sofia is one of the most visited mountains - Vitosha. It is a wonderful park and a irreplaceable natural gift for our capital for which many big cities and capitals in the world can envy it. The imminent geologist from Vienna F. Hochshteter says that Sofia and Vitosha are inseparable like Neapol and Vesuvius. In 30 min. drive from the center of Sofia is the mountain complex Aleko - Shtastlivetsa in which many sport facilities are built - ski-tracks, lifts, etc. Vitosha is a favorite mountain not only because of its conditions for skiing but also for walking tourism. An interesting phenomenon of nature can be seen here - stone rivers. In combination with the beautiful nature, the built base and the nearness of the city Vitosha and the mountain center are especially attractive for visits from Bulgarian and foreign tourists.
| The most beautiful town at the foot of the mountain of Pirin is undoubtedly Bansko. It is the newest ski center built in the last years. The old houses in Bansko have an original renaissance architecture which is typical only for this town. The past masters skillfully used stone and wood to create original windows, balconies, rooftops. In the preserved until now churches big crosses, precious icons and the art of some of the most famous icon painters are kept. Banks is a starting point for the ski tracks and routes to some of the highest and most beautiful areas of Pirin. In the small town that has preserved the atmosphere of past ages there are excellent conditions for an active holiday. Small cozy family hotels are built in which several elements of the renaissance architecture are preserved. |
