Mule Deer The mule deer lives in the deserts of North America, Mexico and the American Southwest. Mule deer are brown and they have large ears. A new set of antlers are grown on the male's head each spring. The antlers grow extremely fast in the summer, and sometimes they grow 1/2 inch each day! Apart from having large ears, mule deer also have large eyes. They can see clearly in the dark and this warns them of dangerous predators. In the early morning and evening, mule deer come out to feed. They eat shrubs, twigs and farm crops. Like a lot of other desert animals, mule deer get moisture mainly from their food and dew. So they only need to drink a little water. When a mule deer is being chased, it usually hides behind a rock or plant. In the spring, fawns are born. At this time conditions are not as harsh as other times of the year, and this greatly increases the fawns' chance of survival. [The Mule Deer ]
