Desert Bighorn Sheeps Even the name of these animals tell you they have big horns. Well, at least the rams do. Some rams can have curved horns as heavy as 12kg! Females have short, thin horns, and the horns do not curve like a male's. They live in the rocky hills and mountains in the American Southwest. Desert bighorns need to drink water every few days. Despite this, they can travel long distances of dry deserts at a time. A really interesting thing about travelling is that females and males travel separately in their own herds. They do not join together as a whole big group. Desert bighorns usually eat grass, flowers and thorny bushes. Sometimes they use their big horns to slice open a barrel cactus. Then they can eat the juicy pulp inside. When it is very dry, they can be so desperate that they dig up the water-storing roots and bulbs with their horns to get moisture. Desert bighorns live and find their food in a fixed territory of about 25sq.km. This is the home of their parents. They travel on the same routes in the area looking for food and water. Even when there is little food, desert bighorns rarely go outside their own territory.
