According to some explorers of folk customs, “The Koukers’ day”
itself has been inherited from the Thracians. They had accepted the Greek cult of
Dyonisius- the God of vines, wine and fertility.
The spreading of this pagan custom
in South- east, North- west and west Bulgaria is a result of late migrations (XVIII- XIX
c. AC). Nowadays the “Koukers’ games are equally distributed in: Greece (North from Olymp and Thesalia), Macedonian, Turkey (the
suburbs of Istanbul), Bulgaria (Black Sea coastline, Thracia,
Sredna gora, the upper part of the river Struma, South
Dobrudza), Romania (North Dobrudza), Besarabia. According
to the scientists all these people are temporarily inhabiting the Balkan Peninsula and the
Danube- Carpatian district. They all have custom coinciding in origin and
content with the “Koukers’ games”. The Bulgarian have “Koukeri”, “Dzamali”,
“Startsi”; the Greeks- “Kalogeri” and “Kudunades”; the Romanians-
“Tuka”, “Brezaia” and “Plugushorul”; the Serbs- “Mashkare”,
“Klotsalitsa”, “Turitsa” and “Dedove”. All these rituals have one and same old
Greek origin.
