The Words


=) - A happy face that you might find in a chat room. Variants: :), :-), =}, ;-)

=( - A sad face similar to the happy face. Variants: :(, :-(, =(, :**( (crying)

=P - A face with a tongue sticking out. Variants: :-P. ;-P

Browser - A program that allows you to view web pages.

Buggy - The term used when a program has problems. Such is the term used with BETA software, or incomplete software. Complete software still has bugs.

Client - A computer system or process that requests a service of another computer system or process (a "server") using some kind of protocol and accepts the server's responses. A client is part of a client-server software architecture.

DOS - It's not DOS, the text based operating system, but instead Denial of Service, things that can deny your Internet access.

Download - Files sent to YOUR computer are files you are downloading. The computer sending the file to you, however, is uploading.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions file. The file for all the "questions you want answered".

GUI - Graphical User Interface. A user interface based on graphics (icons and pictures and menus) instead of text; uses a mouse as well as a keyboard as an input device

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language, the basic code web pages are created by.

IP - An Internet Protocol is a connectionless, best-effort, packet switching protocol. All you need to know is to play games you usually give your opponent your IP in order for him/her to connect to you. It is YOUR number while on the Internet, much like a phone number.

IRC - Internet Relay Chat. The earliest form of chat and still quite popular. A chain of servers that establishes a "CHAT" network.

ISP - Internet Service Provider. The companies which provide you Internet access without the "extra" content provided by AOL or some other Online service.

Query - A question. Also known as the keyword(s) sent to a search engine demanding feedback.

Server - The computer that sends information to your PC. The Internet is a chain of client-> server relationships, much like a network.

Spam - To post irrelevant or inappropriate messages to one or more Usenet Newsgroups or mailing lists in deliberate or accidental violation of netiquette.

Trojan - Backdoor program into your computer. Runs in the background so its harder to detect.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator, an address widget that identifies a document or resource on the World Wide Web.
