National Competitions

 

Copa America

 

Eligible : National teams from all the member nations of Conmebol

Frequency : Every two years

Format : The tournament is staged in a predetermined host nation. Teams are divided into three four-team groups, within which each team plays the other three once. The top two teams from each group plus the two best third-place teams advance to the knockout stage of quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals.

 

Club Competitions

 

Copa Libertadores

 

Eligible : The reigning champion, plus the top two teams from each member nation of the South Africa Football Confederation (Conmebol)

Frequency : Annually

Format : First round of mini league play (four groups of 4 teams, one of 5) eliminates 5 teams. The remaining 16 then play knockout competitions; teams are drawn in pairs, which play home-and-home series.

 

Supercopa

Winners will be awarded the Joao Havelange trophy

 

 Eligible : Previous winners of the Copa Libertadores

Frequency : Yearly

Format : Knockout competition. Clubs are drawn in pairs and play each other in a home-and-home series. There were 17 entries for the 1995 edition of which 7 clubs from Argentina, 5 from Brazil, 2 from Uruguay and one each from Chile, Colombia and Paraguay.
