The functions of the stem include conducting materials between the roots and the leaves, supporting the plant, and placing the leaves in light. External stem structures include buds, bud scale scars, lenticels, and leaf scars. Internal stem structure include pith, xylem, and phloem. In monocots, the vascular tissue is scattered throughout the stem. In dicots, the vascular tissue is arranged in a ring. |
