Cell Division - The Cell Cycle

The Cell Cycle

The cell cycle is divided into six phases. The first phase is interphase. In interphase, the cell is not actively dividing. Instead, it is carrying out everyday activities. There are three stages in interphase:

  • In the G1 stage of interphase, there is a high rate of replication of organelles and protein synthesis.

  • In the S stage of interphase, DNA is replicated.

  • In the G2 stage of interphase, the mitotic apparatus are produced.

The next four phases are in mitosis.

The last phase is cytokinesis. In cytokinesis, cellular organelles and the cytoplasm are divided between the two new cells.
