1) The origin

¡¸The beautiful and grand decoration painted in wooden architecture¡¹ It's the very Danchung - Korean traditional colors. It's been used in
the part of wall pictures and Buddhist paintings. Being so many nursery stories to be related to it at ancient 3 nations time, It means that it is vitalized at that time.
There's no record when to bring to our country exactly, but It's
supposed to do from China at 3 nations time. There are two stories about Solku and Damzing written in the book - 3 nations' history.

  2) The purpose

The wooden architecture has advanced in ancient Korea. Danchung also has been as developed as it. These are the very reasons to use it.

The first one is to emphasize durability of timber architecture. Danchung has been used to preserve it for a long time. Painted with Danchung-paint and paste, they intended to protect the timber decay and crack. This is the very important reason to use it.

The second one is to cover the roughness. Pine tree which usually have been used by architecture-stuff in Korea are apt to be cracked. Though those are water wetted timbers, as dried, twisted crack has easily happened.

The third one is correct a manufactured work. When an unabled
engraver made a mistake, pine tree can be twisted to up and down.
therefore we need make it painted neatly.

The fourth one is to make people understand Hwaum, the theory of Buddhism. This is a main reason to do Danchung. There's been no building from the past without special buildings for example grand palaces and temples. People should have been shrunken, because Danchung was made too brilliant. Its brilliance is a theory of Hwaum in itself.

 3) The painting process

The Danchung painting process is totally divided to 4 courses. Before proceeding, director, what is called Pyunsu, has to be elected by Danchung painters. Pyunsu is a leader to select its form and design and
direct, complete the proceeding course.  4 courses are Chulcho, Cheoncho, Tacho and Chaewha.
The first one, Chulcho is very important course to do it. It's a working course to draw a basic design. The second one, Cheoncho is to punch the hole by the outline, spreading out a blanket on the bottom. As craver is doing punched by needle, we call this Chuddulki, punching. The third one, Tacho is to tap the bottom paper by a cloth wrapper with a colored powder. The last one, Chaewha is to complete a colored picture by using the planned colors in order.

 4) Its nursery story

There's 2 men's story about Danchung. Those are Solker and Damzing. Solker's nationality is Silla in ancient Korea. His skill of hands is very very excellent. When he had painted at the wall in Whangryongsa temple, many illusive birds used to dash against the wall to die. But there has been no bird after repainting.
Another one, Damzing was born in Koguryu of ancient Korea. Later he had gone to Japan. Asking a bird wall picture from the abbess of Horyuji temple in Japan, after saying not try to come look at it, he began to paint. No news in some days, they suspected Damzing to be a liar. A soon as they had looked inside, Damzing had gone to fly, changed into a bird.
