Leo the lion was sent down by the gods in the Nemean forests near Cleonae. Leo was the fiercest creature in the land, and no hunter could slay it. Its skin was so strong and tough, arrows and bolts bounced off this mighty creature. However, Leo was not immortal. When Hercules could not convince Leo to stop its killing, he was forced to kill it. Hercules' first of twelve quests was to defeat Leo. He was able to take down Leo by smashing him with a tree, stunning him in the process. Then, Hercules used his bare arms and crushed Leo. Out of the hide of Leo, Hercules made his tough battle armor.
