The Causes of the War

There is great disagreement as to what exactly caused the war. Generally two major theories are suggested, with minors theories interposed in between. These two theories include that which states that the practice of slavery in the South led to the violence, while others believe it was the destruction of states rights by an imposing federal government. We don't claim to know or prefer a theory, but are instead here to present them to you. The fighting actually began in 1861 with the battle of Fort Sumter. Confederate soldiers moved on the fort on Apr.12, 1861. The union troops surrendered on the fourteenth.

The immediate causes of the war, include the state of slavery in the U.S., the uprising by John Brown at Harper's Ferry. The election of a republican, Abraham Lincoln, to president, the secession of eleven states, and the strike on Fort Sumter, were all leading causes of the war.
