Siquijor was the first parish to be established on the island. It was founded in 1783 under the administration of secular clergymen.
In 1971, Siquijor became an independent province by virtue of Republic Act No. 6398. The capital was officially transferred from Larena to Siquijor in 1972 with proclamation No. 1075.
Enrique Villanueva
This was once a barangay Of Larena known as Talingting. When it was organized into a municipality in 1925, its name was officially changed to honor Governor Enrique Villanueva of Negros Orieantal.
Larena
This municipality was known as Canoan until it was renamed after the late Governor Demitrio Larena. Due to its port, the largest in Siquijor which can accommodate vessels up to 500 tons. Larena is the commercail center of the province. It has the largest concentration of business and finacial institutions.
Lazi
Originally, the area of this municipality was known as "Tigbawan," a name derived from the type of plant which grew in the bay. This name was changed when the Spaniards established a parish in the middle of the 19th century. Lazi used to be spelled "Laci" as the shoreline with the town's harbor facing northern Mindanao is in the form of a letter "C."
Maria
Maria like no other towns to Siquijor province is quite and peaceful. Giant acacia trees shade the market which is adjacent to the great stone Church built during the Spanish Period. Aside from the peaceful atmosphere, Maria is favorite spot for visitors because of its lovely beaches. Particularly known is Alagdoong Beach which has facilities for swimming and picnicking.
San Juan
San Juan, which was originally a part of the towns of Siquijor and Lazi until it was organized by virtue of act del Aņo 1863 is noted for its white sandy beaches and bountiful marine life. There are many areas of interest for snorkels and scuba divers all along it shores. Beautiful sparkling beaches can be found in almost every coastal barangay. The municipality it is also known for its natural spring-fed pools and St. John de Capilay Lake which is located in the center of the plaza.
