L U Z O N: A Changing Landscape

Four years after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the face of Luzon continues to change, rendering some places unrecognizable even to their own people. Whole towns in Central Luzon have disappeared, covered with lahar, and in many areas affected by the eruption, only rooftops and treetops can now be seen.

Other parts of Central Luzon are undergoing changes as well, but this time, brought about by men whose goal is to bring their province forward to development. Two areas are being developed into industrial parks for local and foreign businessman -- the Subic Bay Freeport in Zambales and the Clark Special Economic Zone in Pampanga.

In the face of all of these changes, both natural and man-made, there are some places in Luzon that remain unchanged. Ilocos, with its old Castilian houses and cobblestone streets, seems to have been frozen in the 16th century. The Sagada and Banaue are virtually untouched and unspoiled, even as they welcome local and foreign visitors. If you crave for moments of repose and quiet, these are the places to visit.
