Another person we interviewed was Josip Ivanovich. He was born in Rabas, Croatia, which is on the Adriatic coast. He had nice experiences with the other ethnic groups because everybody was in one country, they had no problems and they had a beautiful life. “Nobody cared who is who and who is what and where they are from.”, said Josip. There was no problem of ethnic hatred.

“The war started because of the stupidity of politicians, greed, and they wanted to make a bigger Serbia in terms of land.”, said Josip. He has no hatred toward the other ethnic groups and he believes that the simple people are not to blame because they are innocent. “They followed the orders of politicians and military generals because if they didn’t follow them then they will be in trouble.”, said Josip.

“When things started to go wrong, the ethnic groups were separated because there was too much killing between them. Neighbor kills neighbor, even mixed marriages kill one another. Innocent people and relatives were the victims of the war and so they cannot co-exsist.”, said Josip. It is impossible to live together and that is why they must separate.

He doesn’t hate any other groups, except for the country's politicians, and he feels sad because Yugoslavia was once a beautiful country and is now broken up. He doesn’t agree with the end result because he didn’t believe in seperation. He also believes that the West destroyed a beautiful country. “Yugoslavia was the same as the United States, because it was a large country and they had a multi-ethnical society.”, said Josip.

He believes that these five countries are going to have a lot of trouble surviving in today’s greedy world. “How Croatia survived when there is more population in Athens, Greece than the enitre country of Croatia.”, wondered Josip. All the republics have sold everything to the West so they can survive. The true losers are the innocent people. He doesn’t want to go back home because he is sad of what happened. He feels sorry for all the ethnic groups in Yugoslavia. “Before everything was different and better, and now there are five republics and everybody has to pay for their on survival.”, said Josip.
