Throughout
the United States and many other Western nations more
and more people are turning to DNA testing to resolve
issues of paternity. Whereas an approximate 80,000
in the U.S. had tests performed in 1988, the number
has skyrocketed to 200,000 only a decade later. The
dramatic increase is due to cheaper tests that cost
around $500.00, improved sampling techniques that
now require only a cotton swab on the inner cheek,
and the increased awareness of the validity and accuracy
of DNA tests. Test results can help courts determine
appropriate actions in cases of child custody, visitation
rights, child support payments, estate planning, and
inheritance rights among others. Families also often
choose to have the tests performed simply for peace
of mind.
