The $41 million Velodrome located in The Crest of Bankstown (in Sydney's west), an area of recreational parkland that has existing hockey, soccer and athletics fieldsm is designed to become Australia's premier cycling facility. The velodrome will be named after the winner of Australia's first cycling gold medal, Dunc Gray, at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic games. The enclosed, compact domed structure covers about 11,000 square metres and the roof will be a metal decked one. This roof will hold glazed, central skylights that have light controlling louvres to utilise and maximise the amount of natural light as well as eliminating shadows on the track. The banked 250 x 7 metre Baltic pine timber track will have its infield sunken to 1.2 metres below the track's safety zone. The infield can be configured for a variety of other sports like Badminton and Basketball, as well as being used for banquets, trade shows and exhibitions. 3,000 permanent seats surround the track and during the Games another 3,000 temporary seats will be added to take the capacity to 6,000, amphitheatre style, with a public concourse linking them. The complex also includes retail services, amenities, gymnasium, athlete change rooms, venue and management rooms and race and commentary facilities. The velodrome has all the usual access features like lifts, access toilets, tactile signage, ramps, wheelchair seating and access parking provisions. Reflecting the most environmentally friendly games so far, the velodrome is another example of environmental excellence. Natural ventilation is used, venting out the warm air in the amphitheatre and drawing in cooler air from outside the seating bowl, natural light being utilised to lower energy consumption and protection measures for the surrounding bushland also being taken into consideration.
