The State Sports Centre, opened in 1984 and built on the site of the old abattoir saleyards, is a multipurpose complex. It currently hosts amateur and elite training and competition for 26 sports, including Basketball, Judo, Volleyball, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Wrestling.

During the 2000 games it will host Taekwondo and Table Tennis. The centre’s main arena seats 5,000 people and apart from sporting events, is used to host a variety of concerts, trade fairs and exhibitions.

The centre features a sports medicine centre, weight-training rooms, and lecture and function rooms for meetings, dinners, conferences and cocktail parties. The State Sports Centre complex also contains The State Softball centre, State Hockey centre, grass playing fields that can be used for staging outdoor events and a golf driving range.

The centre also has a permanent exhibition to pay homage to the sporting greats who achieved national and international fame. The Hall of Fame includes a display of rare sporting memorabilia from the late 1880’s to today.
