The
Olympic Stadium (Stadium Australia) is situated at Olympic Park,
Homebush Bay. It will host the opening and closing ceremonies,
track and field events, marathon endings and the gold medal soccer
final. It is the largest Olympic Stadium in history. Stadium
Australia will be able to hold crowds of up to 110,000 during the
Olympic games when two temporary grandstands (open air) are added
to each end of the stadium. It will be host to both the Olympic and
Paralympic games in 2000, then will be used for sporting matches
and concerts.
The
roof of Stadium Australia provides spectators with shade and
protection without a claustrophobic feel. The 3 hectare roof also
maximises views and provides the best light conditions by being
made of translucent polycarbonate. Being the most environmentally
friendly games yet, power is reduced through the use of natural
lighting and energy saving lights; water is conserved by low use
fittings, using storm water for toilets and rainwater collection;
and the management of waste through recycling and sorting
regimes.
These
games are also more accessible for the disabled. There is
wheelchair seating, lifts, audio signals, tactile floor tiles,
aisle seats for the blind, counter and ticket booth heights set for
people in wheelchairs and accessible entries, exits and toilet
cubicles everywhere.
After the
games the temporary grandstands will be removed and the
stadium’s capacity will return to 80,000 with a plan to
eventually have the whole stadium covered, not just the
seats.
