Wu Sangui and Chen Yuanyuan

The history of Qing Dynasty commenced on the Shanhai Fortress which is the Eastern end of the Great Wall. In order for people to remember the general who did the most, people carved his name on the great fortress. His name was Wu Sangui. However, in this story, somebody else was also involved. It was a beautiful prostitute, Chen Yuanyuan.

Yuanyuan was famous of her beauty and lots of people longed to win her hand. Sangui and Yuanyuan were in love with each other. Just when Sangui wanted to buy her out from the owner of the brothel, he came to know that Tianwan had already bought her. Tianwan was a powerful man as he was the father of one of the emperor’s concubine. However, the bad thing was that Tianwan was a man in his sixties while Sangui was still young. Yuanyuan was very much unhappy about this.

After the unsatisfied marriage, the emperor, Ming Huaizong, became pretty anxious of his country. The Qing armies were attacking out-side of the Great Wall, rebellions were going on in his land. Nobody wanted the land of his own country to end within his hands. Huaizong was of no exception. Soon, he called in Wu Sangui who was then a general of the Ming imperial court. He was entrusted to the job of protecting Shanhai Fortress.

During war time, the rich family worried the most over their properties as they were afraid that the enemies might take over everything they owned. Therefore, in order to stay prosperous, they needed someone powerful to act as a support. Wu Sangui was the most powerful at that time, as he controlled the power of the entire army. In this situation, Tianwan invited General Wu into his house. He agreed.

General Wu wore his armour as he approached Tianwan’s house. They had some food and entertainment. Shortly after that, Sangui wanted to leave. Tianwan immediately stopped him and led him to another room. Yuanyuan was inside and poured the wine for both men. At the sight of his love, Sangui changed into his normal clothing. The couple talked within themselves throughout the dinner. Tianwan recognized the situation and therefore, asked the general of what he could do if the enemies entered the land of China. Sangui answered that he would protect the Tian Family only if Tianwan would give Yuanyuan to him. Tianwan had no choice but to give his consent. Sangui then sent the girl to his father’s house.

Soon, one of the rebellions became more serious than the others. It was led by Li Zicheng. He led his people to fight against the capital city and soon captured it. The emperor of China, Ming Huaizong, was killed. The rebellions searched all the treasures inside the palace. They took charge of everything at that time. It was then, the leader, Zicheng, came to know about the beauty of Yuanyuan. He immediately went to Sangui’s father and forced him to give up the girl. He also commanded him to write to his son to surrender to his army.

Wu Sangui did not know all these until his father wrote to him. The letter told him of everything happened here and asked him to surrender to the Qing armies. Sangui agreed as his own emperor was already dead. His father was taken as a captive of the rebellions and Li Zicheng had killed over thirty of his family members. Wu Sangui had no choice but to open up the gate of Shanhai Fortress and led the Qing armies right to the capital.

It was here that the couple finally united with each other and with this, our story shall end.
