The Reason for Building the Great Wall

There were legends in China at that time and the most commonly know one was the one about the pill to attain immortality. Qin Shihuang was fearful of death and during his reign, he refused to admit defeat and surrender to death. Instead, he commanded his people to search for a pill to attain immortality and in fact, he even went on the journey himself. Apparently, he failed in all his attempts to find the pill. Nevertheless, he was determined to succeed in finding the pill till his very last breath escaped his lips.

At that time, there was a scholar who failed to qualify as an official based on his own abilities. When he came to know that his emperor was keen to attain immortality, he went to see the emperor and told him of many fanciful things, which were all total lies. Finally, the emeperor believed him and he gained the full confidence and trust of the emperor. He then went on the search of the pill of immortality on the emperor’s imperial order.

After a long time, the scholar finally returned. He told the emperor how hard he had been searching for the pill of immortality, how hard it was to reach the standard and eventually admitted his failure in a round about way. However, he came back with a book he had copied from the original book belonged to a god.

He presented the book to Qin Shihuang who read it immediately with sheer interest. To his disappointment, he did not understand the meaning of the words and failed to comprehend the meaning of the book. However, he understood four words "wang qin zhe hu". They mean that the nomadic tribes to the North of China’s territory will end the Qin Dynasty under the rule of Qin Shihuang.

He trusted every word of this and grew anxious of losing his land to the Xiongnu who was the most powerful nation to the North of China. He then ordered one of his generals, Mengtian, to lead three million soldiers to attack the Xiongnu. He claimed victory. The Xiongnu was driven further to the North and the empire was extended. The land won by the Qin army was fertile as.well.

Qin Shihuang was still not contented with this. Hence, he connected all the walls built by the other states, which were brought under his control during the earlier periods of his reign to increase the country's defence. The wall is known as The Great Wall of China.
