| Director, he was born on March 19 th 1926in Bologna. Graduated in law in Rome, he was actively involved with theater within the university, therefore he passed to cinema as documentarist, realizing between 1948 and 1954 fifteen short films, among which Pugilatori, Il mercato delle facce, Soldati in città. In 1954 he began in the film with subject with Le ragazze di S. Frediano, from the homonym novel of Vasco Pratolini, showing not only a solid work, but also a happy fiction vein. Only five years after, in 1959, he could realize his second film of notable and formal emphasis on content over form, Violent summer, in which it was narrated a love story in the breakdown of the last war. In 1961 he gives us an acute female portrait with Girl with a suitcase and the following year, with Cronaca familiare, drawn from the homonym story of Vasco Pratolini, composes a film of noble make, psychologically deepened, even if a little bit artificial and academic formally. Then he has realized a vigorous human play with Le soldatesse (1965) and, partly, with, Black Jesus (1968). Zurlini has immediately imposed among the Italian directors for the rigor of his style and the seriousness of his purposes, that have prevented him from coming to loud terms with his production. His works, in a manner more or less evident, testify an acute sensibility for the individual dramas, that are found through a deepened analysis of thecharacters psychologies and an humanized vision of the landscape, that derives him from his valuable and intense activity of docurnentarist.
