FRANCESCO ROSI
Director, he was born on November 15 th 1922 in Naples. He interrupted the studies of jurisprudence, he moved in Rome to 1946, entering in the world of the show business, first as Ettore Giannini’s assistant in theater, then as assistant-director of Luchino Visconti (La terra trema, 1950, Bellissima, 1951, Senso, 1954), of Luciano Emmer (Una Domenica d’agosto, 1950, Parigi è sempre Parigi, 1951), of Michelangelo Antonioni (I vinti, 1953), of Ettore Giannini (Carosello napoletano, 1954), of Mario Monicelli (Proibito, 1955). He wrot the subject of Processo alla città (1952, L. Zampa), he completed Camicie rosse (G. Alessandrini) and he took care of the technical direction of Kean (V. Gassman). In 1958 he realizes his first films, The challenge, that tells an episode of Neapolitan " racket ", and he gets a prize at the Mostra of Venezia. In 1959 with I magliari he widens his discourse, setting a story of itinerant sellers in Germany with clear social and politics indications. In 1962 with Salvatore Giuliano, that is an ample cinema investigation on the Bandit Giuliano and on the Sicily of the postwar period, he gives us his best, acute and deep work, realized with watchful and effective style. The following year he got the Gold Lion at the Mostra Of Venezia with a vigorous and tense film, even if less deep and original of the precedent one, Hands over the city, that denounces an episode of building speculation in Naples. After a stay in Spain in 1964, he realizes The moment of truth (1965), of less care, even if in the intentions he wanted the film to be on the modern Spain observed through the private story of a young bullfighter; and More than a miracle (1967), a realistic-fantastic fable, doesn't deprive of savory and vivacious moments. Since his first films, Rosi has always shown a director of solid task and careful to the most important and living problems of our society. The contact with directors among the most meaningful of our cinema has allowed him to face the first direction with a notable experience on his shoulders, either on the technical plan and on the artistic one. His films, always vigorous and sometimes rich of pages of art, show in the director a modern sense of the show and a deep ideological and political engagement.
