| PLOT
Mary, young American lady, comes to spend a period in Rome, to her sister. In Philadelphia she has left her husband and her small daughter: having known the teacher Giovanni Doria, she falls in love with the Italian youth. The hard relationship lasts one month when, after a phone call from America, Mary decides to depart immediately. Giovanni reaches her to the station, and asks for an explanation. The two discuss longly: Mary, that was decided to follow the call of the distant dears, is going to capitulate, when the meeting with her nephew Paul furnishes her a pretext to subtract to Giovannis insistences. This, feeling offended, slaps her. The two breakup. Met again, they shelter in an abandoned wagon: here a brakeman discovers and conducts them to the precinct of the station. When Mary declares that she will depart, the two are released. For Giovanni the disappointment is bitter: Mary, that has been induced to the departure by the fear of the scandal, swears him eternal love. CRITIQUE After the failure of Umberto D., De Sica accepted to direct two American stars with David Selznycks money, and all shouted to the betrayal of Neorealism. Variation on Breve incontro di Lean, the film is not that bummer that was told, even if the surrounding sketches, that would give color, are innoportune and the story is conventional. (P. Mereghetti Dizionario deifilm 1998, translated by Alice Castoldi) NOTES Collection of 343 million lire against the 106 of Umberto D. |
