PLOT,CRITIQUE and NOTES

A young Florentine mecanich nicknamed Bob (Cifariello) has contemporarily five girls: the one he has promised to marry, disappointed, tries the suicide; another (Podestà) says to have been seduced during the engagement’s party; the third (Rubies) has left her fiancé for him, the fourth (Ralli) leaves him without regrets, the fifth (Calvet) would bring him away from Florence. The first feature film of Zurlini, drawn from the homonym novel (but in the titles it is marked as story) of Vasco Pratolin on the screen-play of Benvenuti and De Bernardi. Bright protrait of an unrepentant ladies’man and his conquests, realized with unusual freshness and sincere irony, but with a weak final as regards the novel, in which the girls avenged bringing him naked around the district.
Of relief the attention to the context and the figurative performance. The young actors are very good. A poster at the beginning of the film explains the nickname of the protagonist: “From the times when Robert Taylor appeared on the screens, beautiful young fellow, physically gifted, often with the clipped moustache, always with his velvet eyes, in short, those that the women like so much are called with the generic and derogatory name of Bob”, and the film is devoted just “to that poor boys, innocent victims of their charm:” (P. Mereghetti “Dizionario dei film 1998”, translated by Alice Castoldi)
