PLOT, CRITIQUE and NOTES

Giovanni Percolla (Buzzanca), a young boy of Catania, that had always boasted his virility, moves to Milan with his wife (Moguy): he comes out on top in the business world, but his new life lets him lose all his sexual charge and he decides to return to Sicily with his wife. A bitter and ironic comedy that adjourns and recovers the bitterness and the moralistic attitude of the book: the whole literary dichotomia between the dreamed woman (and therefore passionate) and that concrete (and cold) is resolved by Lattuada in the representation (not always original, it is necessary to say) of new female images: his wife that cuts short her hair and wears a masculine suit, or the ingenue and sensual nymphet (Aulin). The verses recited by the protagonist have drawn from the volume Occhi antichi of Antonio Cremona (P. Mereghetti “Dizionario dei film 1998”, translated by Alice Castoldi)
