In the Emilia of the immedate postwar period, the life of an agricultural cooperative is threatened by some bandits that act on behalf of a landowner. Mix of actuality and pretense according to the logic of a cinema of direct and immedate political intervention on the national reality, a well planned and charming story, written by exceptional scriptwriters. De Santis directs his first feature film, with an eye to the documentay and the other to the hollywood cinema, realizing and admirable baroque picture of Italy in course of reconstruction, with its country Po world upset by the war, with its survivors, bandits, black markets men, kulaki and cooperatives in pages of authentic epic puff using with acumen the populist myths of the earth and of the popular justice.
