John Donne (1572-1631)

  • John Donne was born in London in 1572 to wealthy parents. His parents also happened to be Roman Catholic, which was unusual in the Protestant England.

  • Donne enrolled in the University of Oxford at age 11, and later studied at Cambridge, and Lincoln's Inn, where he studied law. He went on to become a clergyman, a poet, and and prose write.

  • It is presumed that Donne relinquished the Roman Catholic faith in which he had been brought up about 1594, and joined the Anglican church.

  • John Donne is considered by many to be the greatest metaphysical poet, as well as one of the greatest writers of love poetry.

  • Donne wrote 'Satires', his first book of poems, as well as `Songs and Sonnets',

  • Donne served Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, while in England. But when Donne eloped with Anne More, Lady Egerton's niece, Sir Egerton turned against him. In the following decade , Donne endured poverty and unemployment.

  • John Donne died on March 31, 1631, in London.
