The Five Senses

The Five Senses and Our Brain: The world around us is not what we think it is. It is only so because our senses tells us so. Unlike us, dogs are unable to distinguish colours, hence to them, the world is one devoid of colours. However, they are able to pick up sounds of much higher pitch then humans and their sensitive noses can pick up even the slightest scent. Hence their world is so much different from ours.

Sensory receptors all around our body pick up stimuli from all around us which are in turn converted to impulses in neurones and interpreted by our brain into the various information. How do we distinguish one impulse from another? The secret is in the neural codes.

The neural codes define the information the impulse carries and is deciphered in the brain. One way the brain decodes the impulses is by their frequency. A strong impulse like a heavy rock landing on you foot generates lots of impulses, the intensity hence is deciphered as pain. A milder kind of stimuli like the gentle breeze of the wind generates relatively fewer impulses and hence the brain tends to disregard the impulses and interprets it as a negligible feeling. Different parts of the brain are in charge of different feelings, hence stimulating these parts of the brain would generate the feeling it is in charge

The Five senses are as follows:
1. The sense of touch
2. The sense of smell
3. The sense of taste
4. The sense of hearing
5. The sense of sight
