Protecting the brain

Cerebral Meninges

The brain is protected by the cranium and meninges. The meninges are named : the outermost dura mater, middle arachnoid and innermost pia mater.

Hair and skin cover the hard bony skull and act as shock absorders. The inside of the skull is lined by the dura mater which is a thick and tough membrane.

The arachnoid membrane, made up of delicate connective tissue, separate the dura mater from the subarachnoid space, which contains vital cerebrospinal fluid.

The innermost pia mater, rich in blood vessels that supply some of the blood to the brain, follows every contour of the brain's surface.

To make things clearer, below is an illustration of the protective layers which cover the brain.
