Mapping the Nervous System

Nervous system Flow Chart

What is the nervous system?
The human body has many control systems. Each system contains groups of organs all of which are made up of many types of cells. The brain belongs to the nervous system. Any part of the body which contains neurons , or nerve cells, is part of the nervous system.

The nervous system performs three functions:

  • To collect information about from inside and outside the body
  • To process and put together information, often from our previous experiences
  • To act upon the information and to carry out actions in response.

The nervous system may be subdivided into three subsystems

  1. The Central Nervous System
  2. The Peripheral Nervous System
  3. The Autonomic Nervous System
