Brain Tour :

Cranial Nerves: Branches for headquarters.

Explore the cranial nerves.

Number and nerve Type Location Function
Olfactory (I) nerve Sensory Arises in the lining of nose and terminates in primary olfactory areas in temporal lobes of cerebral cortex Smell
Optic (II) nerve Sensory Arises in the retina of the eye and terminates in visual areas in occipital lobes of cerebral cortex Sight
Oculomotor (III) nerve Mixed, primarily motor Motor portion: Originaties in midbrain and distributes to upper eyelid and four extrinsic eyeball muscle; ciliary muscles and sphincter muscle of the iris

Sensory portion: Consists of sensory fibers eyeball muscle and terminates in midbrain.

Movement of eyeball and eyelid
Trochlear (IV) nerve Mixed, primarily motor Motor portion: originates in midbrain and passes to an extrinsic eyeball muscle

Sensory portion: consists of sensory fibers from the muscle and terminates in midbrain

Movement of eyeball
Trigeminal (V) nerve Mixed Motor portion: originates in pons and passes to muscles used in chewing. Sensory portion: consists of three branches: opthalmic, maxillary and mandibular. The three branches terminate in pons Chewing, conveys sensations of pain ,touch and temperature .
Abducens (VI) nerve Mixed, primarily motor Motor portion: Originates in the pons. and is distributed to eyeball muscles.

Sensory portion: Consists of sensory fibers from the muscle and terminates in the pons.

Movement of eyeball
Facial (VII) nerve   Motor portion: Originates in the pons and passes to facial , scalp, and neck muscles. Also goes to tear and salivary glands.

Sensory portion: Arises from taste buds on tougue and terminates in gustatory areas in the parietal lobe of the cerebral cortex; also consists of sensory fibers from muscles of face and scalp.

Expression
Vestibulocochear (VIII) nerve Sensory; formally called auditory nerve Chochlear branch : Arises in the spiral organ (organ of hearing) and ends in auditory areas in temporal lobes of the cerebral cortex.

Vestibular branch: Arises in (organs of equilibrium) and ends in pons and cerebellum

Hearing and balance
Glossopharyngeal (IX) nerve   Motor portion: Originates in medulla and is distributed to swallowing muscles of the throat.

Sensory portion: Arises from taste buds on tougue and terminates in the medulla; also consists of sensory fibres from swallowing muscles.

Taste and regulation of blood pressure
Vagus (X) nerve Mixed Motor portion: Originates in medulla and terminates in muscles of the throat, voice box, respitory airways, lungs, esophagus, heart , stomach, small intestines, most of large intestine ,and gall bladder; parasympathetic fibres of the ANS pass to innervate involuntary muslces and glands of the digestive tract.

Sensory portion: Arises from all of them mentioned above and terminates in medulla and pons ; also consists of sensory fibers from muscles supplied and taste buds.

Visceral movement (like the churning of your stomach), muscle sense, taste
Accessory (XI) nerve Mixed, primarily motor Motor portion: From medulla and supplies voluntary muscles of throat and voice box and originates from cervical spinal cord.

Sensory portion: Consists of sensory fibers from muscles supplied.

Movement of tougue during speech, swallowing
Hypoglossal (XII) nerve Mixed, primarily motor Motor portion: From medulla and supplies voluntary muscles of throat and voice box and originates from cervical spinal cord.

Sensory portion: Consists of sensory fibers from muscles supplied.

Movement of tougue during speech and swallowing.
