Brain Stem : Pons

Principal Parts of the brain

Pons

The pons, which mean bridges, lies directly above the medulla and in front of the cerebellum. Like the medulla, the pons consists of nuclei and scattered white fibres.

The pons connects the spinal cord with the brain and parts of the brain with each other. It conveys information from the cerebellum to the cerebrum.

The nuclei for certain pairs of cranial nerves originate in the pons. The pons also contains nuclei that help regulate breathing. These are called the pneumotaxic area and the apneustic area.
