Admissibility - An admissible search algorithm is one that is guaranteed to find an optimal path from the start node to a goal node.





Allophone - A set of phones within a language that contain the same information.





Artificial Intelligence - The ability of a machine to perform those activities that are normally thought to require intelligence.





Autonomous - Separate, individual, not involved with others.





Avatar - Representation of a human, usually in a game. [John's avatar was destroyed by that trap!]





Case-based reasoning Technique whereby cases similar to the current problem are retrieved and their solutions modified to work on the current problem.





Diphone - A transitional sound identified by segmenting adjacent phones at their steady-state centers.





Formant - A band of high energy concentrated in a specific frequency range.





Fuzzy Number - A set of numbers around a certain interval.





Fuzzy Set A set of elements which may have a graded degree of membership between no membership and complete membership.





Linguistic Variable - A fuzzy set or collection of fuzzy sets which represent a single concept in a particular context.





Misconceptions - Incorrect thoughts, ideas, or notions. For instance, a common misconception is that Star TrekŠ is a bad thing. :)





Phone - Minimal unit of speech sound.





Phoneme - The total collection of allophones that operate similarly.





Psuedo-Random - The type of random numbers a computer can generate. Not truely 'random', becuase computers can't think.





Random - With no specific pattern. [Shooting in random directions is a sure way not to hit your target.]





Simulator - Something, usually a computer program, that represents a real-life thing. For instance, a "war" simulator is meant to reproduce real life war.





Syllable - A unit of spoken language containing a vowel, dipthong, and/or a consonant.





Terrain - An area of land; ground. [That area of terrain looks like a good place to settle.]





Time Normalization - A technique used to eliminate nonlinear timing differences between two waveforms.





Vocalic Sound - A sound containing a highly defined formant structure.





Voiced Sound - A sound in which the vocal cords vibrate.





Word - A sound or collection of sounds that communicates a complete message.
