Xerxes eventually ordered his fleet to withdraw from the invasion point of Hellespont. He went home, leaving the land army under the command of Mardonios.
Still Greece was far from safe. Mardonios worked hard to get allies, Athens refused to accept. Spartat and the rest of the Peloponnesians were reluctant to accept his wishes.
Soon the Persians living in Greece were attacked by the nearby Spartans and many Persians were killed and captured. Thebes the chief Greek ally of the Persians was taken.
The Persians had many valuables that the Greeks took after capturing them. After the wealth had been used for the Greeks temples the remaining portion was given to the Greek soildiers.
The last battle between the Persians and the Greeks took place at Cape Mykalé in Ionia, where the Greeks attacked the remainder of the fleet.
The Greeks now had a complete victory over the Persians. Still, they decided to form an alliance to fight future battles against them. The reason being that Persia was still a very powerful empire.
