Alessandro Volta was the creator of batteries. He got the idea when he used electricity to move frog legs. Another Italian scientist, Luigi Galvani, had identified that electricity caused a frog's leg to twitch. Galvani argued that "animal electricity" was unique to animals so Volta set out to see if he could produce the same energy with inanimate objects. Using silver and zinc disks seperated by brine-soaked boards, he produced the first practical battery in the early 19th century. Volta also invented the electroscope. He is best known for having volt, a measurement of an amount of electricity or electric potential, named after him.
