Surroundings

Amazon River derives from Leticia which is found in the military establishment of Santa Sofía in the Colombian border and in the front "The Island of the Monkeys", converted to a sanctuary of the fauna and flora of the region.

The paradise for the lovers of nature constitute the Natural National Parks of Amacayaco and Cahuinarí. Please note the corresponding part that is offered in more detailed information.

Caquetá

Like the rest of the region, it is characterized by its dense forests, its wealth rivers, and its quiet lakes. To the border of the tideland the deer scents the surface of the water and the nabbed jaguar monitors. In the tree cup, the churuco gives the alarm voice and the deer flees followed by the guagua and chased by a scandalous flock of parrots, while the jaguar gets into the leaf and seeks other prey.

Between the attractive principals of the Caquetá is the navigation by the numerous rivers that bathe this territory, from the river Orteguaza you can go to the Caquetá and in tugs and boats the itinerary Florencia – La Tagua is fulfilled in several days.

The lagoon of Chairá, in the surroundings of Cartagena of Chairá is one of the most beautiful places of the department; the lagoon is famous by its wild orchids and the working days that it offers to its fishermen.

CAQUETA

Florencia

Monk Doroteo proposed the name of the city by the abundance of flowers in the region. It is the capital of the Caquetá and it is located in the middle of a fertile zone bathed by the rivers Orteguaza, San Pedro and Bodeguero.

Putumayo

It is extended from the western running board of the Andes, to the Amazonian plain on the east; it is delimited by two large rivers: to the north the Caquetá and to the south the Putumayo. The territory of the department is split into large three zones: High, median and low Putumayo.

The High Putumayo is found on the spring of the mountain chain of The Andes of Colombia. In this zone, the Valley of Sibundoy stands out.

Mocoa.

RIOIn a cloudy day it is possible to see the jungles of the Amazonian plain, from a nearby altitude to 1500 m. Mocoa is an urban island in the middle beautiful forests.

Approximately 15 kilometers from Mocoa, the river Mandiyaco is rushed by the cliff that closes the way to arrive to the Caquetá. The Mandiyaco passes through a narrow and deep channel in a capricious way built by the waters in the rock. About 3 km. from Mocoa, the river Hornoyaco form the waterfall of the same name, a beautiful jump that has a height of 60 m. The trees are separated forming an alley where water decreases.

Puerto Asís

City that is found in the lower Putumayo. A nearby place is Port Leguizamo, where we find one of the richest places of flora and wildlife of the Colombian territory, the Natural National Park de la Paya.

The department has an extension of 43.000 Km.2 and a population of 71.000 inhabitants.

It is located in the north part of the Amazon and its bathed by an interacted net of water courses, among them the river Guaviare, that is formed from the confluence of the rivers Guayabero and Ariarí and it gives its name to the department. This river is limited to the north with the departments of Meta and Vichada, which determine in Colombia, the division between Orinoquia and Amazonía.

In the territory prevail the flat lands or slightly waved, with some important mountainous countries, as those of Chiribiquete, San José and Tunahí. Their/its rivers are split into two principal basins: to the north the called " white rivers", that born in the mountain chain, of white or yellow waters, rich in mineral nutrients and in fishing, pay tribute to the Orinoco; standing out are: the Guayabero, the Guaviare, and the Inírida. To the south the called " black rivers", that born in the jungle, of obscure or crystalline waters, with under content of nutritious mineral and scarce fishing; the most important are: the Apaporis, the Itilla, the Macayá, the Unilla and the Vaupés. When a white river and a black river meet, their waters are not mixed, and is said when it is considered to force the mixture in an artificial way , the waters by themselves get separated.

In this zone there exists the most exquisite fruits of the Amazon: the arazá, the copoazá and the Amazon anón. These fruits are produced in all the basin of the Amazon, but here it s cultivated in a technical way thanks to the advanced investigations done by Institute Sinchi. In jurisdiction of the capital, San José de Guaviare, we find the National Natural Reservation Nukak and part of the National Natural Park of Chiribiquete.
