Food Webs

Often, a food chain is too simple and narrow a representation of prey-predator relationships, in a community. A broader and more complex idea can be provided by a food web. A food web is a combination of more than one food chain. Often, a single organism can exist on more than one trophic level, in different food chains, i.e. an organism that eats a primary consumer in one food chain, could feed on a secondary consumer in another food chain. When this is true for many organisms in a community, a complex food web can be seen.
