of Wildlife
- But perhaps
the most fundamental reason to protect species is an ethical one,
rather than one based on ecology or economics. As far as we know,
there are no microorganisms, no plants, no animals, and no fungi
on any other planet. The living things that share the world with
us are the only other known living things in the universe. Many
people believe that we, as a single species, do not have the right
to destroy a large proportion of our living companions. It is
easy to argue that we are already taking an unreasonable share
of the Earth's bounty. Before we increase that share, ecologists
believe, we should consider the substantial reasons to respect,
value, and most of all preserve the organisms that support our
lives on Earth. Without certain species and with the rapid extinction
of some others, our planet will be in danger of its own extinction.
