    Licancábur is an extinct volcano rising above the Altacama Desert. It is part of an extensive north-south line of high volcanoes, many of which are over 18,000 feet. Pili, the highest mountain of the region, rises roughly forty miles to the south, entirely in Chile. The summit of Licancábur still holds the remains of an Incan altar and several Incan shelters. It also has a small lake near its summit which owns the distinction of being the world's highest lake. There are no glaciers on the mountain, and the ascent is fairly straightforward.
