hor_green_bar1.jpg Winds and Bands hor_green_bar1.jpg

Hubble Space Telescope's image of Saturn's Storm - courtesy NASALike other gas planets, aturn has an extremely high wind velocity on the surface. Around the equatorial region, winds can reach speeds of 500 meters per second (1,100 miles per hour)! Like on Jupiter, the fast winds are banded (however much fainter). The winds blow toward the east. At higher altitudes, the wind speeds become progressively slower. An interesting fact is that at latitudes greater than 35 degrees, the winds blow in different directions, alternating in easterly and westerly directions. The interactions between the bands spawn vortices and large storms, much like the Great Red Spot found on Jupiter and the Great Dark Spot found on Neptune. In 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope discovered a huge white cloud around Saturn's equator, which was not seen when the Voyager passed by the planet. Later in 1994, another smaller storm similar in nature was seen.
