Neptune's surface - courtesy Dave SealMuch like Jupiter and Saturn, Neptune has an internal heat source, radiating more energy than it receives from the Sun, thus making surface winds to reach extremely high speeds. In fact, Neptune has the fastest clocked wind speed than any other gas planet in the solar system! The winds are in latitude bands and many of them interfere with each other to produce small to large-scale storms and vertices such as Jupiter's Great Red Spot. On Neptune, several similar structures persist such as the Great Dark Spot and the Scooter.

Most of the winds on Neptune blow westward, which is in the opposite rotation of the planet. The highest speed of winds found (which happens to be near the Great Dark Spot) is 2,000 kilometers an hour (1,200 miles per hour).
