Longhorn Cattle


The Longhorn was first introduced into East Texas by the Spanish in the 1690s. The Longhorn was used to feed mission inhabitants, priests and Indians, and was stocked in mission "ranchos". Many of these animals escaped or were left abandoned into the wild.

Wild Turkey Meleagris gallopavo

During Spanish exploration of what is now Bexar County, Wild Turkeys were seen and recorded in Spanish travel journals. During the Aguayo expedition of 1721, Pena noted in his journal that he had seen deer, turkey and quail.

The turkey is a large and colorful bird found in thickets, woodlands, and prairie conditions. The Native Turkeys are most common in the Edwards Plateau.

Comal Blind Salamander Eurycea tridentifera

The Blind Salamander is found in a few caves of Comal and Bexar Counties in limestone caves. It is in total darkness; so it has adapted eyes that are buried under its skin. It has pale colored skin, a large head, and translucent skin where the largest organs can be seen.

Cave MyotisMyotis velifer

The Cave Myotis is found all over south to west Texas caves, old buildings, and under bridges. The nocternal animal is seen flying around pools to drink. Their diet consists of antlions, weevils, and small beetles. The species has two sub-species.
